Cosmetic surgery compensation: plastic surgeon found guilty of misconduct for pressuring patients

A leading Harley Street cosmetic surgeon has been found guilty of misconduct for pressuring a patient into having plastic surgery by offering her significant discounts.

Dr Aamer Khan specialises in a range of plastic surgery procedures and is well regarded in the industry having operated on a number of well-known celebrities, including Patsy Kensit and Denise Welch. He also regularly appeared on television to offer guidance and opinion.

Nevertheless, following a hearing of the General Medical Council (GMC) Dr Khan’s fitness to practice had been found to be impaired after he broke stringent marketing rules and failed to provide the patient in question with ‘good clinical care’.

Dr Khan was called to a hearing of the GMC after he offered a group of female friends a significant discount of 15% (equal to £900 each) if they booked a fat removal procedure together and paid within a week.

Under medical practice guidelines which govern private clinics, surgeons must not pressure patients in any way to undergo surgery. In addition to pressuring the patient to having the operation, the GMC upheld five additional allegations of Dr Khan’s failure to provide good clinical care, including not having a person present during the operation to monitor the patient’s safety and not providing adequate after care following the operation.

Whilst Dr Khan is still able to perform cosmetic procedures the GMC has imposed strict conditions relating to the way in which he treats his patients.

Cosmetic surgery patients who have been pressured into going-ahead with a procedure orwho have recieved inadequate levels of care before, during or after an operation might be entitled to make a claim for compensation.
