Sickness absence lower for small firms

Results of a recent survey conducted by the Federation of Small Businesses has shown smaller firms have significantly lower rates of absence amongst employees than the national average. Members of the Federation lost, on average, 2.4 days per employee due to sickness absence, compared with the national average of 7.7 days.

Whilst this is good news for small employers the study also reported that these lost days still cost small employers an average of £1,500 each and every year.

One proven way in which employers of all sizes can reduce their rate of sickness absence is by introducing a short, but compulsory, ‘return-to-work’ interview after any period of absence. Not only has this been shown to reduce false claims of illness, but it also allows employers to identify patterns of absence and deal with any causes of absence at an early stage.
