Lower Thames Crossing Scheme: Advice for Property & Land Owners

In October 2022, National Highways submitted an application for a Development Consent Order to authorise the construction and use of the Lower Thames Crossing.

This scheme aims to provide a new road of around 14.5 miles in length which will connect the M2/A2 in Kent and the M25 south of junction 29, crossing under the River Thames in a tunnel. National Highways state that its objectives in promoting this scheme of national significance include supporting sustainable local development and regional economic growth, relieving congestion at the Dartford Crossing, improving safety and minimising harmful impacts on health and the environment as well as improving the resilience of the major road network (including River Thames crossings).

The Planning Inspectorate has confirmed acceptance of this proposal and is currently preparing for its examination of the application which will enable it to make recommendations about the merits of the scheme to the Secretary of State. If confirmed, the DCO will enable the compulsory purchase of all land needed permanently for the scheme, together with the ability for National Highways to both create and extinguish rights over land as required.

Full details of this application can be found at https://infrastructure.planninginspectorate.gov.uk/projects/south-east/lower-thames-crossing/

Registration as an Interested Party is possible before Friday 24th February 2023; once formally registered, Interested Parties have the right to participate in the examination process, whether by appearance at meetings/ submission of written evidence.
