Family Lawyer, Alex Garrett appears on BBC Essex Radio to discuss whether January is really "Divorce Month".
Holmes & Hills Solicitors’ specialist Family Law and divorce solicitor, Alex Garrett has today appeared on BBC Essex Radio, joining presenter Ben Fryer to discuss the commonly used phrase “Divorce Month” and whether January genuinely sees an increase in divorce enquiries.
During the discussion, Alex explained that while January is often portrayed as a peak period for divorce, the reality can be more nuanced. In his experience, there is typically an increase in new enquiries at the start of the year, but this is sometimes overstated and can be driven by marketing narratives rather than a sudden surge in relationship breakdowns.
Alex highlighted that the period following Christmas can prompt reflection, particularly after what is often a stressful and financially demanding time for families. For some couples, this can lead to a realisation that existing issues within a relationship are no longer sustainable, which in turn results in enquiries about separation or divorce.
The conversation also explored the impact that separation and divorce can have on children. Alex emphasised the importance of appropriate support and guidance, referencing organisations such as Cafcass, which supports the Family Courts and provides helpful resources for parents, and Relate, a charity offering counselling services to parents and children navigating separation.
Alex was also joined on the programme by Thurloe, who runs a free divorce and separation support group in Essex, highlighting the value of accessible community based support alongside legal advice.
