September is Alzheimer's Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness of dementia, promoting understanding, and highlighting the support available to those affected.
To mark the occasion, Amelia Clarke, Court of Protection Solicitor at Holmes & Hills, sat down with Mark Neville and Lisa Masanovic from the Alzheimer's Society to discuss the charity's work and the importance of recognising the signs of dementia early.
The Alzheimer's Society is the UK's leading dementia charity, providing support to people living with dementia and funding vital research into the condition. The organisation also campaigns to improve the lives of those affected by dementia and works to ensure their voices are heard by decision makers.
The Alzheimer's Society provides advice, information and practical guidance to help individuals and families navigate the challenges that can arise following a diagnosis.
The charity also offers dedicated support for carers, family members and friends who are caring for a loved one with dementia. In addition to its advice services, the Alzheimer's Society provides companionship service, campaigns for better support and services, and funds research into Alzheimer's disease and other rarer types of dementia.
While dementia is often associated with older people, it can affect younger individuals too. The youngest person to be diagnosed with dementia in Essex was 9 years old. Whilst this is extremely rare, it is important to raise awareness of ‘young onset dementia’. The Alzheimer’s Society class this as a diagnosis under 65. Those diagnosed under this age will have significantly different needs to those diagnosed later in life. The Alzheimer’s society are able to support people of all ages who are affected by dementia. Similarly, Holmes & Hills have experience of working with both the young and elderly who have lost mental capacity.
As of November 2025, Holmes & Hills have been recognised as an Inclusive Dementia Community. Amelia drafted a comprehensive action plan which subsequently received approval and was recognised by Essex County Council. The plan details what the firm has already done and plans to do in the 24 months post the making of the award. As a firm of solicitors, we are committed to meeting the needs of our whole community, including those living with dementia.
Whether you are living with dementia, caring for a loved one, or concerned about changes in memory, organisations such as the Alzheimer’s Society and Holmes & Hills are here to provide support, advice and reassurance every step of the way.
