Working in partnership with contractors, contract managers and project managers

Sam works with those clients of the firm operating in the construction industry, advising on making, defending, or mitigating the risk of claims arising out of construction works and construction contracts.

Specialist Construction Law solicitor and expert speaker:

As well as being a specialist Construction Law solicitor in Holmes & Hills Legal 500 recommended Construction Division, Sam is a Partner at Holmes & Hills Solicitors and leads the firm's Dispute Resolution Department. Sam is also an expert speaker who, believing that prevention is better than cure, is on a personal mission to change the construction industry by educating those within it on the fundamentals of construction law.  Sam firmly believes that this is the key to avoiding the majority of disputes that arise in construction contracts.  Sam is adept at presenting complex legal issues in a simple and digestible manner, meaning his services as a speaker are in high demand.  He is regularly booked to deliver talks in person, on webinars or to speak on leading industry podcasts.

Sam also works in partnership with and represents developers and employers, main contractors, sub-contractors, regional consumer-facing building companies and end-consumers, in all parts of the country.

Sam is regularly working closely alongside professional contacts, both locally and nationally, including project managers, architects, construction consultants, contracts managers, and dispute resolution service providers, in servicing and advising mutual clients.

Sam’s primary focus is on dispute avoidance and he regularly provides construction law training to his clients as well as advising on contracts and terms proposed by (or to) others prior to engagement, as well as throughout and at the conclusion of a client's engagement with an employer, contractor, sub-contractor or professional consultant, in the event the nature or scope of the engagement changes or the actions of either side stray from those set out in the construction contract.

Where disputes are unavoidable, Sam is regularly advising on contentious matters concerning, amongst others:

  • Payment disputes
  • Defective works
  • Extension of time claims
  • Loss and expense claims
  • Suspension and termination
  • Professional negligence

Delivering Construction Law updates:

Sam's expertise in Construction Law has seen him deliver, amongst other things, Construction Law seminars and updates to clients, professional contacts and members of Holmes and Hills’ partnered trade associations (the Scaffolding Association and the National Association of Shopfitters) at venues across the nation. Following requests from the Chartered Institute of Builders (CIOB), Sam has also delivered updates and seminars to CIOB members in the East of England.

Always looking for the next challenge:

With a very successful past in Thai boxing, Sam continues to train and keep fit and is always on the lookout for that next extreme test of physical endurance.  In recent years Sam has, along with colleagues at Holmes & Hills, cycled coast-to-coast, completed the Three Peaks Challenge, walked 100km without sleep or rest as part of the Royal Gurkha Regiment's Trail Walker Challenge, run the London Marathon (twice) and participated in the ”last man standing” Suffolk Backyard Ultra.

Sam is based at Holmes & Hills Solicitors' regional Head Office - the A12 Commercial Hub - in Colchester.
